Retail Activation (Product Key Activation)

 This method is used when a user purchases Office from a retail store or as a digital download. The product is activated by entering a 25-character product key.
  • One-time Purchase: The user gets a perpetual license, usually for a single device.
  • No Subscription: It doesn't require a recurring payment (except for Office 365/Microsoft 365).
  • Offline Activation: Office can be activated offline through telephone activation if internet access is unavailable.

    Volume License Activation

    This is used for organizations and businesses that purchase multiple licenses for Office products (commonly via Microsoft’s Volume Licensing Service Center). Two primary methods for volume activation are Key Management Service (KMS) and Multiple Activation Key(MAK). 
  • Automated Activation: Office installations automatically activate by contacting the KMS server on the network.
  • Periodic Re-Activation: Office must contact the KMS server every 180 days to remain activated.
  • Unlimited Activations: No activation limit on the number of devices, as long as the KMS server can reach them.
